For fans of 7-Eleven slurpees, July 11 is pretty much a national holiday. Every year on July 11, 7-Eleven gives out free slurpees to customers in honor of the chain's birthday. Since the event attracts a ton of customers across the country, 7-Eleven has made the difficult decision to cancel 7-Eleven Day this year because of the ongoing pandemic.
Though many stores and restaurants have begun opening up again in recent weeks, social distancing is still required in order to curb the spread of the novel coronavirus. Due to the popularity of 7-Eleven Day, the powers that be at 7-Eleven are concerned the celebration will draw big crowds that won't allow for social distancing measures to be implemented. Out of an abundance of caution, 7-Eleven decided the best course of action was cancelling the event all together.
"At 7-Eleven, our top priority is the safety of customers, Franchisees and employees," 7-Eleven Senior Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer Marissa Jarratt said in a statement. "Gathering 9 million of our closest friends in stores on one day just didn't feel right, but I am heartened that we now have the opportunity to help the communities and neighborhoods that have been the lifeline of our business since 1927."
To help make up for the disappointment of their customers, all 7Rewards loyalty app members will receive a coupon for one free medium Slurpee in their account n July 1. The coupon will be valid for the month of July, so, customers will be able to get that free slurpee in a safe way.
