No Serious Injuries In I-10 Tanker Crash, Fire
Posted Wednesday, August 27th 2014 @ 2am

The 24-year-old driver of a tanker truck that overturned and caught fire Tuesday afternoon on I-10 in the Little Woods area of New Orleans East escaped serious injury in the crash and the interstate was fully reopened to traffic nearly 9 hours later.

The truck was loaded with approximately 8,600 gallons of fuel at the time of the crash.  The driver said she was exiting the I-510 and merging onto the eastbound I-10 towards Slidell when she was cut off by another vehicle.  As she swerved to avoid a collision, the tanker overturned and caught fire as it slid into the median separating the east and westbound lanes of the interstate.

Smoke could be seen from miles away and the interstate was closed in both directions.  While the westbound lanes were reopened about 2 hours after the 4:30 p.m. crash, the eastbound lanes remained closed for nearly 9 hours.  Using foam, firefighters brought the fire under control within 90 minutes.

The driver of the 10-thousand gallon tanker was the only person hurt.  She suffered injuries to her face, left arm and right knee.
