Starting today, smokers in New Orleans will have specific receptacles on the city's streets to dispose of their cigarette butts.

"The city of New Orleans and the Downtown Development District, in partnership with TerraCycle, are launching a new pilot program to collect and recycle cigarette butts, with the goal of keeping New Orleans streets cleaner," DDD President Kurt Weigle announced Tuesday.

Weigle says New Orleans is the first city in the United States to implement a citywide collection system, with the installation of 50 new cigarette-recycling receptacles on several blocks in the Downtown District.  He says the receptacles will be easily identified with stickers that say "Recycle Your Butts Here."

The DDD Clean Team will service the receptacles while the company, TerraCycle, will supply them and cover all costs related to installation, maintenance and shipping. For every pound of cigarette waste collected, TerraCycle will donate $4 to the DDD.
