Algiers Pastor Charged With Aggravated Battery By Shooting
Posted August 28th, 2014 @ 5:55pm

New Orleans Police say an Algiers pastor who shot at two alleged copper thieves, striking one in the head, has been arrested on one count of aggravated battery by shooting.

Sixty-two-year-old William Littleton is pastor of the Greater Morning Star Baptist Church and a former NOPD officer.

The incident occurred Wednesday afternoon shortly after 5pm. Interim Supt. Michael Harrison says Littleton told officers he saw two men stealing copper from an air-conditioning system that belonged to his church and his snowball stand. Littleton ordered the men to stop while holding them at gunpoint.

"The subjects then entered a truck which was between a residence and the snowball stand and attempted to flee. Littleton told the officers he fired shots in the direction of the subjects," Harrison stated.

Fifty-year-old Rodney Mitchell was shot in the head and is listed in critical condition. The other suspect, 34-year-old Joseph Cross, was not injured but was arrested and charged with theft of copper.
